How much exercise does a Westie really need? Around an hour a day β but the type matters as much as the minutes. Here's the breed-specific guide.
The short answer
- Most adult Westies need about 1 hour of exercise a day, split across walks and play.
- They're working terriers β sniffing, digging and games matter as much as walking.
- Puppies and seniors need less, and growing pups shouldn't be over-exercised.
- Mental exercise is just as important as physical for this clever, busy breed.
How much, by age
| Life stage |
Daily exercise |
| Puppy (under 12 mo) |
Short, frequent bursts β roughly 5 minutes per month of age, twice a day |
| Adult (1β8 yr) |
About 1 hour β walks plus play and sniffing |
| Senior (8 yr+) |
Gentler, shorter, more frequent outings to suit their pace |
The right kind of exercise
πΆ
Daily walksTwo walks a day, with time to sniff and explore β sniffing tires a terrier brain beautifully.
πΎ
Play & fetchShort games of fetch or tug burn energy and build your bond.
πΎ
Sniff & forageScatter-feeding and snuffle mats tap their natural hunting instinct.
π§
Puzzle gamesFood puzzles and training games keep a busy terrier mind satisfied.
πΎ From one Westie owner to another βa bored Westie is a barky, diggy, mischievous Westie. Half the βbehaviour problemsβ owners ask about are really just an under-exercised terrier brain looking for a job.
Don't over-do it with puppies
Growing joints are delicate. A common guide is the five-minute rule β about five minutes of formal exercise per month of age, once or twice a day β until your puppy is fully grown. Free play and pottering in the garden are fine; long forced walks and repeated stairs or big jumps are not.
Mental exercise counts
Westies were bred to think and work independently. Ten minutes of training, scent games or a food puzzle can tire them out more than an extra lap of the park β and a mentally satisfied terrier is a calmer one at home.
Active joints, healthy weight
Regular exercise keeps a Westie lean and protects the joints β but the breed can still face joint and skin conditions. Insuring early keeps that care affordable if it's ever needed.

Frequently asked questions
How much exercise does a Westie need?
Most adult Westies need around an hour a day, divided between walks, play and sniffing time.
Can you over-exercise a Westie puppy?
Yes. Growing joints are vulnerable, so follow the five-minute rule β about five minutes per month of age, once or twice a day β until they're fully grown.
Do Westies need mental as well as physical exercise?
Very much so. As working terriers they need to use their brains; scent games, training and puzzle feeders are excellent.
Are Westies good running companions?
A fit adult can enjoy gentle jogging, but they're sprinters more than distance runners. Build up slowly and avoid heat, and never run a puppy.
